Full Coverage vs. Liability Only

"Full coverage" is not an official policy type. It is shorthand for liability plus collision and comprehensive.

What people mean by full coverage

Typically liability, collision and comprehensive together, sometimes with medical payments and uninsured motorist added. There is no standard legal definition, so always compare the actual coverages listed.

When liability only can make sense

Older vehicles with low market value are the common case: if the payout after a total loss would be small relative to the premium and deductible, some drivers drop collision and comprehensive.

When lenders decide for you

If your vehicle is financed or leased, the lender generally requires collision and comprehensive for the life of the loan, and may require a maximum deductible.

How to compare fairly

Price the same limits and the same deductibles across providers. A cheaper quote with a higher deductible or lower limits is not the same product.
